What does a solid fuel safety check involve?
- As your landlord, we have a duty to ensure that all solid fuel burning appliances, fires, and flues are maintained and in a safe condition to be used. To do this, we carry out safety checks using qualified HETAS engineers.
The check involves maintenance and minor repairs to solid fuel burning appliances, as well as sweeping of the flue.
We’ll also check that there’s a carbon monoxide detector fitted in each room containing a solid fuel burning appliance or fire, and that it’s working correctly.
What if an appliance fails the safety check?
- The safety check certificate will show details of any problems found during the check, and any action that has been taken. If the appliance fails the check, the engineer will either carry out minor repairs or declare the appliance unsafe to use.
A label will be attached to the appliance stating ‘Do not use’. It’s important for your own safety that the appliance isn’t used until it’s declared safe to use again.
If the safety check shows that the solid fuel burning appliance or flue are beyond economical repair, we’ll remove the appliance and make good to the opening.
We’ll also install an electrical socket next to the chimney breast so that you can fit your own electric fire.
Can I install my own solid fuel appliance or log burner?
- We won’t grant permission for you to install a solid fuel fire or log burner.
If we find a solid fuel fire or log burner in your home that you didn’t get our permission to install, we’ll require you to remove it.
